How CBNs Can Help You in Your Weight Loss Journey

Weight loss surgery is a journey full of challenges and victories. It’s a journey best embarked with a strong support system from family, friends, and the medical professionals you meet at the beginning of your weight loss journey.

At Foothills Weight Loss Surgeons in Knoxville, TN, our patients have the support of our clinic staff as well as our certified medical professionals. Recently, Advanced Nurse Practitioner, Wendy Heidel earned a Bariatric Nurse Certification. Along with the rest of our team at Foothills, Wendy plays a key role in helping patients succeed in their weight loss journey, and earning a CBN certification has only enhanced the support and the quality of care Wendy provides.

What is a Certified Bariatric Nurse?

A Certified Bariatric Nurse (CBN) certification is an advanced credential for registered nurses working on a bariatric team. CBNs are established by the American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) to give nurses the professional recognition that they have met certain requirements and have demonstrated professional competency in bariatrics.

To earn a CBN certification, candidates must hold a Registered Nurse (RN) license for a minimum of two years in caring for morbidly obese and bariatric surgery patients, and they must pass the CBN examination.

Wendy Heidel has years of experience working with bariatric patients. She says, “Achieving my Bariatric Nurse Certification seemed like the next step in my career as a bariatric nurse. I’ve been working with Dr. Colquitt for quite a while, and we decided that it’s time–I need to do it!”

Currently, Wendy leads the Foothills Weight Loss Management Program, a non-surgical program to help obese patients in their weight loss journey. The program offers private coaching with Wendy, as well as nutritional education and support.

Why is Certification of a Bariatric Nurse important?

According to the ASMBS, the purpose of the CBN establishes a professional standard for qualified bariatric surgical nurses and establishes a level and breadth of knowledge and skill. The certification also validates experience, increases credibility, and strengthens public trust and patient confidence.

Wendy says, “CBNs deliver quality care for the morbidly obese and the bariatric surgeon. We promote values of advocacy, research, and education. I think the CBN also gives my patients confidence that I am competent in my field.”

She adds, “Being part of the ASMBS and as a CBN connects me with invaluable resources like, CME opportunities, journal articles, conferences, and webinar series. There is also online education which I can access and share with my patients.”
