Mary Beth Paxton of Knoxville was feeling frustrated, struggling to lose weight when she heard about the Obalon Balloon System at Foothills Weight Loss Surgeons.
“I had tried dieting before and nothing ever worked. I told myself if I ever hit 200lbs I’d get serious about weight loss, but I didn’t. I got to about 210 and decided it was time to try something,” Mary Beth says. “Obalon was an attractive option to me because there’s no surgery involved.”
Obalon is the first and only swallowable, FDA-approved balloon system for weight loss. It is for those with a lower BMI (30 to 40 kg/m2) The Obalon Balloon System helps facilitate weight loss by taking up space in your stomach so you eat less. Three balloons are placed for a six-month non-surgical treatment, combined with a professionally supervised nutrition and exercise program for optimal weight loss.
The staff at Foothills Weight Loss Surgeons provides education throughout the process to ensure the patient understands the procedure.
“I haven’t had much trouble at all. It’s been a smooth transition and the nurses have helped educate me about diet and vitamin intake. I had no idea was I was putting into my body. I had a horrible soda problem, so I was consuming my recommended daily calorie intake in soda alone, and you can’t drink soda at all during the procedure. Since starting Obalon, I’ve gone from 3000 to 1200 calories a day.” In addition to changing her diet and cutting out soda completely, Mary Beth has also started doing light exercises like stretching, walking and yoga.
When asked what advice she would give someone considering this option for weight loss, she says that the first step is the patient has to be committed. “It has to start with the patient wanting to lose weight. With the first balloon it’s easier, but as the second and third balloon come you have to make the decision to change your lifestyle to see the benefits. It has to be mental.”
Mary Beth also talks about how important it is to have a strong support system. “My husband has also changed his eating habits and lost 20 lbs. This has helped my whole family make better decisions about their food intake.”
In the first four months of the Obalon System, Mary Beth has lost 41 lbs. When starting her journey she was a size 20, and now she’s a size 11. She has two months to go before her treatment is complete, but she’s determined to finish strong and keep the weight off. “This journey has to be about you making the changes. It’s okay to be selfish when it comes to your own health.”
