Weight loss surgery can dramatically change your life. However, for it to be worth it and to achieve long-term weight loss success, you have to make the necessary lifestyle changes.

Foothills Weight Loss Surgeons Recommends these The Dos After Bariatric Surgery

  • Follow your eating plan
Weight loss surgeries work by making changes in your digestive system. This may cause a limitation on the amount of food you eat, change the way food is absorbed in your body, or a combination of both.

After the procedure, you will have to gradually progress from liquid to solid food diet. This gives your body time to adjust to changes.

It usually takes about 9 to 11 weeks before you can resume to solid foods again. Prior to that, you will have to go to several nutritional phases: a clear liquid diet pureed food, and then to soft food.
  • Comply with your recommended nutrition plan
After your surgery, you will be provided with a nutrition plan. This includes a list of the recommended liquid intake and nutrients and multivitamins that you should give attention to. This includes protein, vitamin D, calcium, iron, and vitamin B12.
  • Eat and drink slowly
As you slowly transition to eating solid foods again, you have to eat your food slowly. As you start to eat pureed food, remember to chew, chew, chew your food well before swallowing.

The Don’ts

  • Alcohol
Avoid alcohol especially during the first 6 months after surgery. After surgery, even a small amount of alcohol can cause intoxication. Plus, alcohol is high in calories and low in nutrients.
  • NSAIDs
Ulcers are more difficult to diagnose and treat after bariatric surgery. So, avoid taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen, aspirin, Celebrex, and Motrin.
  • Heavy lifting
Physical activity is vital after weight loss surgery. However, just like with your diet, you should follow your doctor’s recommendations for an exercise program.
Usually, during your first 6 weeks after surgery, you will be limited to light activities and will be prohibited for lifting more than 15 lbs.
