Obalon Balloon System at Foothills Weight Loss Specialists

The Obalon Balloon System is a new option at Foothills Weight Loss Specialists in Knoxville for those who have been unsuccessful in conventional weight loss methods (i.e. diet and exercise), but may not be ready for bariatric surgery.

What is Obalon Balloon System?

The Obalon Balloon System is a non-surgical weight loss treatment that involves swallowing of balloon-filled capsules to control overeating.

It’s an FDA-approved treatment indicated for weight loss in adults with a body mass index (BMI) of 30-40 and who have failed to lose weight through diet and exercise alone.

This weight loss system serves as an adjunct therapy to moderate intensity diet and behavior modification program.

How Does it Work?

The Obalon Balloon System is comprised of three tiny capsules, with each containing an inflatable balloon attached to a catheter.

The patient swallows one capsule every three to four weeks in a medical office. X-rays are taken to ensure proper positioning of the intragastric balloons.

The balloon in each capsule is filled with gas through a catheter attached to the balloon. The catheter is then removed, leaving the patient with a balloon in their stomach. The balloons stay there for six months, filling up space in the stomach which is designed to help the patient feel full and to keep from overeating.

Preparing for Obalon Balloon System

The Obalon Balloon System is a long-term weight loss treatment. Because of this, it’s very important to make sure that you’re ready to make a long-term commitment to — lifestyle modifications such as a healthy diet and exercise program.

To determine if you are an appropriate candidate for the procedure, a Foothills Weight Loss Specialists physician will access your overall health condition. If you’re the right candidate for this weight loss treatment, our Obalon team will design an individual treatment for you.

No sedation is necessary for the procedure. It usually takes about 10 minutes to complete a session.  An appointment will be scheduled for the placement of the two other balloons about a month apart.
