Bariatric surgery is a great tool for achieving weight loss. At Foothills Weight Loss Surgeons in Knoxville, we ensure that our patients meet the general criteria to be considered for bariatric screening evaluations. These criteria are based on the standards set by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. These include:

  • a BMI of 40 or more
  • a BMI of 35 or more and at least one obesity-related comorbidity such as type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea and other respiratory disorders, hypertension, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, lipid abnormalities, osteoarthritis, gastrointestinal disorders, or heart disease
  • failure to achieve weight loss sustained for a period of time with documented weight loss attempts

If the patient meets these criteria, our weight loss experts at Foothills Weight Loss Surgeons require prospective patients to attend in person or view a bariatric seminar online. The free seminars are held several times a month and, educate patients about the bariatric surgery process. Some of the topics covered include the pros and cons of the various weight loss procedures we offer, stories of former patients, and information about obtaining insurance coverage for your surgery.

If the patient decides to begin the weight loss surgery journey,  he or she will start with a bariatric assessment.

What will be considered during the bariatric assessment?

During the bariatric screening, the surgeon will determine whether there are any medical issues that will preclude the patient from having weight loss surgery.

Prospective patients will also undergo a psychological screening to help determine if bariatric surgery is an appropriate weight loss intervention for the patient.

Aside from the physical and psychological assessment, the pre-bariatric surgery process will also include  nutritional education. The goal of the nutrition and diet education is to help patients prepare and adjust to the new eating habits that will be necessary post-surgery and to ensure that they achieve the best results from the procedure.

If conventional weight loss methods have failed you, our team  at Foothills Weight Loss Surgeons in Knoxville are here to walk you through every step of the bariatric process to  help you lose weight and achieve the healthier version of yourself.
